Scenario 1 Reflection

Sue might assume that Richard is upset that he did not receive the promotion.  Sue should not "ASSUME" anything.   A step back from the situation may allow Sue to learn that Richard is going through a rough time at home.  He understands that his performance has slipped with his focus on home matters.  Richard was previously a very strong performer. He has shown the desire to lead and to perform but due to a personal issue, he has lost focus in other aspects of his life, including work.

Sue should employe counseling techniques to describe to Richard some tools that many companies, including her own, provide to their employees which include personal counseling and resources via the human resources department. During the discussion, Sue and Richard established a plan to utilize these resources and for Richard to check in with Sue if he feels the loss of focus creeping back. Since their conversation, Richard's performance has steadily increased and the morale of Sue's entire team has seen improvement.
