Module 1: Collecting and Describing Data

Module 1 Overview (1 of 1)
Module 1 Overview

Module 1 Overview

Module 1 covers Lessons 1-2, Problem Sets 1-2, and Quizzes 1-2.

In this module, we are first going to learn how to describe the data using different metrics – mean, median, mode, standard deviation, and coefficient of variation. These metrics help us understand the data from different perspectives. Of special importance is the concept of frequency distributions. We start with frequency distributions in Lesson 1, and in Lesson 2 we will see that empirical probabilities are drawn from frequency distributions.

During the first week of class, you will form teams. Your team will complete three projects during the course. The purpose of the projects is to put the lessons learned from the content in a manner that is understandable to a general business audience and communicate the crux of our statistical analysis to a manager in a business language, by keeping the statistical jargon to a minimum.

Weekly milestones are provided for all projects to assist you in completing your data analysis. After week 1, you will be able to answer questions a-c, and after week 2 (which marks the end of module 1), you can answer question d.

If you follow these weekly milestones, your team will be done with all the necessary analysis by the end of week 4. Week 5 is all about writing up your findings, and if your team wants, you can book a consultation with one of the instructional team members.

Let's get started by reviewing the directions and expectations for Project 1. Then we'll move into Lesson 1.
