After successfully completing this lesson, you will be able to accomplish the following
objectives.
- Develop an understanding of the unique perspective that need theories contribute to an overall understanding of motivation in the workplace.
- For the need theories discussed in this lesson (Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs,
Alderfer’s ERG Theory, McClelland’s Need Theory), you should be able to:
- understand the components of each theory and assess its strengths and weaknesses;
- compare and contrast them in terms of their similarities and differences;
- evaluate each motivational approach from the perspectives of a scientist (How much research support does the theory have?) as well as a practicing manager (How can/has the theory been utilized in organizations?
