Discussion Board Instructions

Purpose of the Discussion Board: to analyze course concepts as a class on a deeper level than in the readings or to use the readings to facilitate a deeper understanding.

Method for Discussion Board: interact with classmates and instructor by posting thoughtful discussion ideas in the discussion areas.

These assignments are informal discussions, but it is still necessary to cite, quote and reference ideas that you have used to build your post. Paraphrasing is preferred to quotes as that demonstrates your grasp of the ideas, but if you use someone else’s words, makes sure to quote, cite and reference. Here is a resource to help you do so appropriately:

The most important aspect of this project is that it is an interactive assignment. It is important to interact with your classmates as they will provide diverse perspectives on the topics at hand, which will expand your knowledge of the concept immensely.

You can choose 5 of the 13 available discussions to participate in. Note: Remember that you must participate in the final discussion board ("Putting it all together") as one of your 5 discussion boards.

There technically is no right or wrong answer for these assignments, but you must make your points based on factual evidence and in a clear and concise manner. This means with clear thesis statements, detailed explanations, apparent connection between concepts and behaviors, and strong organization.

Content quality

Need to apply knowledge from coursework and/or outside resources in a coherent and thorough manner that is relevant to the discussion topic. Always explain your point thoroughly so that your classmates do not have to read anything into your words. Do not just state opinions. If you want to agree or disagree, make sure to explain why and provide evidence to support your argument/point.

Content quantity

Need to make at least two posts per lesson (of the five that you choose). One post should reply to the original question, and one post should responds to a classmate or instructor comment. Each response needs to be at least 2 or 3 paragraphs so that your ideas are explained thoroughly.

Content timeliness

You need to make at least one post by Thursday 9 AM so that everyone else in the class has a chance to respond to your ideas. The other post is due by Sunday 9 AM.

Citations and references

When you use someone's words exactly, quote and cite. When you use someone's idea, cite. In both cases provide references. Your ideas must be based on research or theory (i.e. in most cases you will need a citation for each post).
