Lesson 1: Introduction to Inclusive Settings and Collaboration
Introduction
Hello Everyone! I hope your semester is off to a great start. I enjoyed learning about you, your family (and pets), and your passions from your introductions. I am so excited for this group…we have such diverse backgrounds and experiences. This will make this class awesome.
Now, are you ready to dive into the world of special education? Let's go!
First up is the legal side of Special Education. Understanding the legal tenets of special education is a must for all teachers and parents. The biggest thing to remember is special education is governed by laws and these laws are crucial to providing an appropriate education to all individuals with exceptional needs.
In this lesson, we will learn about laws from the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. These laws are the foundation of special education and ensure that students with disabilities receive the support they need.
Next in our world of special education, are the different disability categories! From learning disabilities to autism, every student is unique and deserves individualized support. I am sure you will find this very interesting. We will learn a lot more about this as the course progresses.
Next, we move from the special education laws to the importance of communication. In an inclusive classroom, it's crucial to establish open lines of communication with students, parents, and colleagues. As a former special education teacher and a parent of a child with a learning disability, I cannot emphasize this enough. Communication is CRUCIAL and you will learn to be an excellent communicator in this lesson.
Finally, we will learn about diversity and equity considerations. Every student, regardless of their background or abilities, deserves equal opportunities to succeed!
Remember, as educators, we play a vital role in shaping the future of our special education students. Let's create inclusive classrooms where diversity, equity, and communication pave the way to success! Let’s go!
