Lesson 1: Spreadsheet Basics

Introduction

A spreadsheet is a two dimensional calculator. In this course we will be learning about Excel. Excel is an electronic spreadsheet program that can be used for storing, organizing and manipulating data.

Lesson Objectives

After completing this lesson, you should be able to do the following:

  • define the term "spreadsheet"
  • define and locate the components of an Excel spreadsheet including:
    • cell
    • row
    • column
    • heading
    • active cell
    • the name of a cell - also known as cell references
    • the formula bar
  • create and execute the SUM function in the formula bar
  • search in Google to find Excel functions
  • locate worksheets within an Excel spreadsheet
  • rename worksheets within an Excel spreadsheet
  • locate and use the "File" and "Home" menus within an excel spreadsheet
  • create and edit a spreadsheet
