Complete the readings listed in the course syllabus. You will share your main reponses to the lesson readings as part of your posting to the Course Forum in Task 3.3 below.
Task 3.1: Personal Research: Activities That Involve Reading
Your personal research activity for this week’s lesson is to study the activities that involve reading in one of your specific communities of practice (i.e., home, work, club, or other social group in which reading involves particular practices). Make a list of the activities that involve reading. For each activity, first describe the characteristics of typical thinking and communication that occurs with the reading event. For each type of thinking/communication, reflect on your values for that type of thinking and how it achieves goals valued in that community of practice.
Task 3.2: Yammer | Affinity Group
Note: This lesson's content uses a slide carousel. Once you have completed the current slide, please click on the subsequent sphere at the top of the carousel to proceed to the next topic.
Part One
Post to your Yammer Affinity Group forum a list of valued events from your individual research.
This is due no later than Friday, 11:55 p.m. (ET).
Part Two
Within your Yammer Affinity Group forum, provide commentary to the lists provided by other members. Work together to compare and synthesize a small group list of three (3) types of communication/thinking enacted through the reading events valued.
Finalize your list of three (3) types of communication/thinking no later than Sunday, 12 p.m (ET).
Part Three
Your Affinity Group team leader will post to the YammerCourse Forum your group's consensus. Please use the subject line: Affinity Group __#__ Valued Types of Thinking/Communication

This will take you to your external network that's associated with your course. Underneath Groups, you want to actually find the form that is associated with the specific project. In this example, we're going to use Course Forum.Once clicked, that'll take you to your associated , forum and at this point, you're ready to post your commentary. You post your commentary underneath where it says Update in the text box. Before you click Post, you want to tag your commentary. Click on Add topics. As you can see this now has a cursor, and you can freely type there. For this course, what you want to do is tag it with the actual task number. Once you've tagged it, then click Post. That is how you post to Yammer as well as tag a post.
Task 3.3: Yammer | Course Forum (instead of Lesson Readings Forum)
Based on the various affinity group postings from Task 3.2, discuss specific actions that can be taken to build a community of readers and the valued thinking and communication events in specific community contexts.
Respond to at least two affinity group posts within the Yammer Course Forum, in which you share action ideas and connect them to a quote or idea from your readings of Miller and Gallagher for Lessons 1-3.
You must respond no later than Tuesday, 11:55 p.m. (ET).

Task 3.4: VoiceThread: Book Commercial -- CANCELLED-- TECHNICAL PROBLEMS
Donalyn Miller describes (pp 137-138) how book commercials in her classroom generate an alternative literacy practice. For one of the YA choice books you have finished, record a book commercial video of no more than ONE minute. You can create this video with any tool you are comfortable with (iMovie, Final Cut Studio, Microsoft MovieMaker, WeVideo).
Upload your book commercial to VoiceThread no later than Sunday, 11:55 p.m. (ET).
Finally, enjoy each other’s commercials (Feel free to respond as desired)! You might find another book to add to your pile.

Use the link to Voicethread in the main menu to the left, to access our LL ED520 group. You should automatically be enrolled in the group by using this link. If you encounter any issues, please contact the World Campus Helpdesk.
On the top right, click on the link / icon that says “Add your own.”
Click on the “Create New Voicethread.”
Select "Add Media"
Select “Web Camera.” Make sure your web camera is turned on!
Click the “Allow” button.
VoiceThread will begin a cinematic countdown as a prompt before it starts recording.
Click the “End” button.
Click on “Add Title and Description:” Add your First and Last Name
Click “Save.”
Be sure to check “Allow Anyone to View” and “Comment.”
SPEAKER 1: The following is a brief tutorial on how to reply to a VoiceThread. The first thing you want to do is actually go to your class assignment, review your directions, and as you can see down here, one student has posted. So click on that student's post. As you can see, it's hyperlinked, so go ahead and click on the hyperlink. This should take you directly to the VoiceThread post. So as you can see, the video automatically starts, so go ahead and listen to your fellow student's video. And if you hover over the video this icon pops up, and it's a comment cloud with a plus in it. Go ahead and click on the plus, and as you can see, there's a variety of different ways that you can actually engage your fellow students. So you want to click on, as an example, maybe a text comment. So this is very interesting, thanks. And then all you would have to do is hit Save. And as you can see, this icon appears. And if they hover over it, they can see the text message that you actually wrote. Alternatively, maybe you want to do another video recording. So you would just click Allow. You'll get a countdown as with when you initially created it, and based on the flashing red light, you're now recording. So you would give them your feedback this way. And when you're done with your feedback, go ahead and hit Stop Recording. Hit Save, and as you can see now hovering over here, if you click on it, it'll actually give you the video. Or you could just do it by audio. Or you could actually upload files, too. So there's a variety of different ways that you can actually engage and interact with your fellow colleagues. Let's say, for instance, that my comment here actually is in response to this person. I can actually move my comment closer to that individual so that it is sort of nested that way. So there's a lot of neat features with VoiceThread and a lot of neat ways that you can actually engage your learners and your fellow students. So hopefully this has been helpful, and good luck using VoiceThread and posting.

Task 3.5: Goodreads | Hooked on YA Books
Continue reading young adult literature selections of your own choice. Reflect upon and post one response to the following question: What tensions are your characters experiencing in their social relationships?
Please use the link in the main menu to access the "GoodReads Discussion Forum".
Based upon this task's prompt, post a minimum of one response to a choice YA book to the Goodreads Discussion Forum: Hooked on YA Books no later than 11:55 PM (ET) on Sunday of this week.
Discuss YA literature by posting and replying to commentary within YA literature social media forums. This includes Goodreads as well as any other YA literature social media forum(s) you already belong to. Please note: there is not a minimum or maximum requirement. Post and reply as much as you desire.
Be sure to keep track of your social media posts for each book entry via your Goodreads Reading Journal.
Remember: Please use the Title of the Book for all postings in this forum and in future weeks. If you wish to post about a book that already has a posting, please do so within that book title thread.
