Week 4: Towards a Conceptual Basis of Adult Education

This week we'll be investigating theories about how adults learn and research on effectively teaching adults. We'll also take our first steps in examining the concept of critically reflective practice. The readings and discussions will provide a guide for examining our own ways of using and constructing theory and lay the groundwork for examining adult education in specific contexts.

Week 4 Objectives

By the end of the week, you should:

  • be familiar with some of the major theories on adult learners and learning.
  • understand the differences between the individual and social approaches to understanding adult learning.
  • understand and be able to discuss elements that provide the foundation for good teaching in adult education.
  • be introduced to the concept of critically reflective practice.
