Lesson 2: Common Types of Data Used in Schools

Check for Understanding | Your School's Data

Core Objective: Identify and utilize resources to find specific school-related data.

Find a school, preferably one where you work or have some connection. Find the following information:

  • racial background of students,
  • percent of students on free or reduced lunch,
  • teacher to pupil ratio,
  • standardized test scores (could be state tests, SAT/ACT, NAEP),
  • number of students receiving in-school suspensions, out of school suspensions, expulsions, and
  • how much the school or district spends per pupil.

In one paragraph, please answer the following questions:

  • Does anything surprise you about these data?
  • What questions do these data raise for you? In your response, please explain why.
