Where Does All This Data Come From?
The sources of job information for job analysis are often called subject matter experts or SMEs. SMEs are particularly useful for conducting job analysis, because of their familiarity with the job. These can include:
- Job incumbents: people currently performing the job or people that are "incumbent" to the organization
- Supervisors of job incumbents or higher-level managers
Job analytic information can also be collected from:
- Job analysts: professional consultants that direct observation and other techniques to gather knowledge to compare across jobs
- Customers of the organization who have observed performance through their interaction with the people in the organization
Now, let's move into some more specific types of job analytic methods. All job analysis procedures can be divided into 2 broad categories (McCormick, 1976):
- task- or job-oriented procedures
- worker-oriented procedures
