Coaching

The use of coaching has grown in the last decade. Let us first begin by defining a coach. Coaching is the ability to assist an individual from one level of skill to another. When we hear the word coach, many of us get a visual of a sports coach leading a team to improve and win the game. This is not unlike how the term is used in the business world. Coaching is a means for managers to provide guidance, insight, and encouragement to employees for improved work performance through frequent interactions.

A manager strengthens and enhances learning through a continual day-to-day process going beyond the once a year appraisal system. He or she conveys a set of beliefs and values along with a vision that sets the standard for success in the workplace. The coach enables goal setting and action steps for the realization of extraordinary results. A manager is a coach when he leads his team and provides an environment that supports constant learning, development, and process improvement. Coaches are interested in the performance of their business and understand that to continue to achieve great results, the development of employees is key.

Coaching has many benefits for individuals, teams, and organizations. In addition to improving workforce recruitment and retention, workers feel they are part of the organization which cares about their personal growth. Coaching endorses learning and promotes employees overcoming obstacles to their success. Coaching can help improve communication by reducing misunderstandings and mistakes, and by providing a supportive atmosphere for development.
