Lesson 2: Picturebooks Overview

Lesson Overview

In this lesson we will cover a lot of technical material. We'll be looking at many illustrations from picturebooks and reading some theory on picturebook illustration. The material in this lesson will be foundational for the course. I don't expect you will master it in one week; rather I expect that this lesson will serve as a reference point to return to throughout the course as you do the readings, contribute to discussions, and prepare assignments.

Lesson Objectives

In this lesson you will:

• Look at the characteristics of a picturebook
• Learn about many of the artistic media illustrators use to create picturebooks
• Learn about the physical parts of a picturebook
• Look at some of the artistic conventions illustrators use to create illusion and meaning
