Listen for the verb essere, or ‘to be’.
Listen 2-3 times. Can you identify the various forms of the verb?
Renata: Piacere. Mi chiamo Renata. Sono studentessa.
Renata [pointing to herself]: Sono studentessa.
Renata [to John]: Sei studente?
Renata: Io sono studentessa [pointing to herself]... tu sei studente? [pointing to John].
John: Ah, sì, sono studente.
Renata [to Vanessa]: Sono studentessa. Anche tu sei studentessa?
Vanessa: Sì, anch’io sono una studentessa.
Renata: In questo caso siamo tutti studenti, no?
Antonio: No, non esattamente. Renata, ti presento Caterina. Loro sono studenti. Caterina invece è commessa.

Renata has just introduced three different forms of the verb essere, or ‘to be’:
Sono, which means ‘I am’
Sei, which means ‘you are’
Siamo, which means ‘we are’
Listen to the conversation again: as it continues, can you identify the other forms of the verb essere to complete its conjugation in the present tense? You are looking for a form that says ‘he/she is’ and one that says ‘you (pl.) are’. You may need to replay the conversation a few times to hear them.
Listen again. Identify forms that indicate “he/she is” and “you all are.”
Renata: Piacere. Mi chiamo Renata. Sono una studentessa.
Renata [pointing to herself]: Sono studentessa.
Renata [to John]: Sei studente?
Renata: Io sono studentessa [pointing to herself]... tu sei studente? [pointing to John].
John: Ah, sì, sono studente.

Vanessa: Sì, anch’io sono una studentessa.

The last two sentences of the conversation introduce two more forms of the essere:
è, which means 'he/she is"
siete, which means "you all are"
Now that you can identify the forms of the verb essere, try to pronounce them.
